I’m always on the hunt for more things that will either guilt trip or inspire me into being more eco friendly. I don’t care which strategy someone uses, as long as it motivates me to change my behavior in a way I know I should. Heck, I’ve bought If You Care baking cups (way to go on that smug nomenclature If You Care people). And I’ve also awwwwwed my way to eco changes by watching the uber-precious Ed Begly Jr. do his thing. I just want to grow up to be as cute, concious and crazy as Ed Begly. He shows us that you don't have to be an environmental engineer to figure all of this stuff out.
The guilt trip thing bothers some people. It is annoying, but I try to look past it. When someone is nagging about how awful or damaging something is (especially if it’s something that I do), I try to stay open minded and think about why they’re so passionate about it. We all feel passionately annoyed about something like that.
When I’m forced into a Walmart and see the cashiers putting one item in each bag (I swear they’re trying to make up for everything we’re saving) I want to shake my fist at everyone in the store and give them a big ole guilt trip too. I bite my tongue and don’t waste my breath, because people of Walmart generally don’t give a shiz about the planet. Yes, I will make that generalization. I lived in Walmartville, USA for several years and I have gathered enough evidence to support that fact.
Ooh, look at me up on my soapbox. See, what I mean? For some reason, when we’re all fired up about something we feel is wrong, we tend to get a little pushy. I’ll get down now.
Today, I would like to give you some great unpushy resources for your green journey. Here are some of the best green blogs around.
I love, love, love The Green Cheapskate by Jeff Yaeger. It supplies some great ideas for those of us who can’t afford to buy wind power credits to offset our carbon footprint. I especially loved his recent post Saving Money, Amish Style. Check it out!
The Huffington Post has a great green blog. It’s really comprehensive. Different writers post on green topics that address green news, lifestyle, and diet choices. If you’re going to read one blog about being green (besides this one of course), you should subscribe to Huffpo’s green blog.
For the Love of Green is a fantastic green blog that mainly focuses on green and fair trade fashion. Author Kristine G. has a knack for scouring the web for fashion finds that won’t leave you thinking, “Where did this come from? And what exactly is it?” Plus, she features green apparel that costs less than $50. Score!
