Green Style: Dorm Decor

Oct06

Reduce. Reuse. Upcycle! Sure, recycling is great. But when it comes to big stuff like furniture and creative stuff like room decor, upcycling is the way to go.

We’re on an upcycle kick these days and we’re looking for some inspiration. Thank goodness for the Internet. One google search gave us more than enough ideas to redecorate our dorm room with old things turned new. Here are some of our favorite ideas.

Reduce, Reuse, Upcycle is a fantastic upcycling design blog. She has a wonderful obsession with all things pallet and she posts some of the best upcycled pallet projects on the web. Pallets are a fantastic medium for upcycling. 1. They’re everywhere and 2. They’re free.

If you’d like to make a headboard for your dorm bed, check out some of these upcycled headboard ideas:

There’s a tutorial over at Lovely Crafty Home and it looks relatively simple. You won't need a construtction management degree to put this thing together. It’s all about breaking down the old and assembling the new.

This headboard is so friggin cute. It’s really simple, but the tutorial tells you to mount it on a wall. Since we’re dorm dwellers, we’ve thought of a simple solution. Just mount it on two 2x4’s and sandwich those in between your bed and the wall.

What about jazzing up your desk? If you own your dorm furniture, a little paint can go a long way.

Here’s a great refinishing tutorial from craptastic. We love that green. It’s so bright and happy. Way to go craptastic! Oh, and we also love the name of that blog. One more time- craptastic!

Adding some wall art can really change your room. We’re huge fans of upcycling old books into art. Here’s one of the best tutorials we found this morning:

This book pages wall art by Almost Never Clever is so romantic, intellegent and eco-friendly looking. It’s just plain lovely.

Do you have any other ideas for redecorating your dorm room with upcycled goods?
